Ms. Saira Somnay

First-Year Medical Student | Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine

Saira J Somnay is a first-year medical student at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine in Nutley, NJ. Alongside medical school, Saira works as a scribe in an emergency department, a position she started during her gap year. She earned her bachelor degrees in Molecular & Cell Biology and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, where she also served as the Vice President of Recruitment for the pre-medical fraternity Phi Delta Epsilon. She was also President of the UC Berkeley March of Dimes Collegiate Council, where she created and taught a student-run class about the non-profit and brought awareness to the multifaceted and pervasive premature birth rate problem. Her past involvement with the CHI includes helping create and execute the Sex and Gender Medical Education (SGME) curriculum under the mentorship of CHI Board Member Dr. Neelum Aggarwal. SGME, a facet of CHI’s Science Runway, gave high school students a nuanced look at health determinants and cultural considerations in healthcare with the hope that introducing them to this often overlooked topic early in their education will inspire their educational and professional trajectories. Her interests include clinical psychology, mentorship, community engagement, and the medical fields of oncology, psychiatry, and obstetrics/gynecology.
